You’re 15. You don’t know who your parents are. All you have from them is a bag of random things—a pair of golden scissors. A piece of the Berlin wall. You’re weighed each month and told you weigh too much.

Why does this matter? You live on a barge floating 120 meters above the ground held aloft by ancient, massive hot air balloons. The gas to fire the balloons is carefully metered by grounders below. Every gallon is counted. Every gram is weighed. Oh, and if you ever walk on the earth again—or even come within 20 feet of it—a chip implanted by your heart will explode.

You live in an exotic, terrible world. But you want what everyone wants. You want to find someone to care about. You want to find a way to break free. You want to write your own future.

Welcome to Freja’s world. Welcome to BalloonWorld.
